Struggling with anxiety?
You’re not alone. I know how it feels!
Anxiety is something that has turned my life upside down over a decade and a half ago. It made me loose friends, opportunities, time with loved ones and so much more. No words will ever be able describe the loss.
However, anxiety has also shown me life from a new perspective. It has given me a lot back.
It taught me patience.
It taught me trust.
It taught me to ask for help.
It taught me kindness.
It taught me to value myself.
So whether you’ve been struggling with anxiety because you’re building a business, you’re overwhelmed from the daily demands, or you just experience it and you don’t know what is causing it, here’s a quick exercise to help you.
The “5–4–3–2–1 Grounding Technique” can help calm anxiety by focusing on the present moment:
Step 1: Pause and Breathe
Take a deep breath in for 4 seconds, hold it for 4 seconds, and exhale for 6 seconds.
Repeat this breathing pattern 2–3 times to start calming your nervous system.
Step 2: Engage Your Senses
Identify the following in your surroundings:
1. 5 Things You Can See
Look around and name five things you can see. It could be a clock, a tree outside, or the color of the wall.
2. 4 Things You Can Feel
Focus on four things you can touch. For example, the texture of your clothing, the chair you’re sitting on, or the feeling of your feet on the floor.
3. 3 Things You Can Hear
Tune into three sounds around you, like birds chirping, cars passing, or your own breathing.
4. 2 Things You Can Smell
Notice two smells around you. If you can’t smell anything, think of two scents you enjoy.
5. 1 Thing You Can Taste
Pay attention to the taste in your mouth or take a sip of water and notice its taste.
Step 3: Affirm and Reassure
Tell yourself something calming, like:
- “I am safe in this moment.”
- • “This feeling will pass.”
Why It Works
This technique helps shift focus away from anxious thoughts by anchoring you in the present moment, using your senses to ground you.
