One of the things that I love most about life coaching is the coaches I meet and get to help build their businesses to six figures and beyond. Not only do I get to inspire them, but I am continuously inspired by them, and I grow with each interaction I have with them. They are my teachers as much as I am theirs.

So today I want to help you determine whether or not coaching is for you by showing you what I’ve noticed are the most common threads in these coaches that I work and interact with. I hope that this helps you let go of any doubt you might have about whether or not you are meant to be a coach. You can also use them as reminders any time those pesky limiting fears might try to rear their ugly heads and try to talk you out of pursuing your dream.

After working with hundreds of coaches from all over the world, I have noticed certain traits show up over and over again. You don’t need to have all of them right now to be successful as a coach, but you can develop them over time if you want to be the go-to person in your field and stand out from the crowd.

Let’s see what they are.

#1: You are a natural empath

Natural empaths have a deep understanding of and concern for others’ emotions. This allows people to naturally open up to them. This leads to deep transformational conversations they wouldn’t have with someone who is abrasive or overlooks important moments for potential breakthroughs.

#2: You have a passion for helping others

You derive your fulfillment from seeing others succeed. You have a strong desire to see others grow and excel beyond their current limitations. You are able to hold the space in which people feel safe to see and embrace possibilities.

#3: You are an active listener

Active listeners listen more than they speak, giving others the opportunity to speak and express themselves without interruption. As a coach, I have seen the most amazing shifts in clients when they were given the platform to be heard and acknowledged.

#4: You have a positive mindset

You maintain a positive outlook, even in challenging situations, and you can help others see the possibilities, too. You understand that life has challenges, and you know that the way you look at them determines your experience.

#5: You are inherently curious

Inherently curious people are genuinely interested in understanding what makes people tick and what drives their actions. They explore many options and are willing to ask hard questions to get to the bottom of the problem in order to find the right solution.

#6: You are resilient

You have overcome your challenges and use those experiences to relate to and inspire others. You understand that you can’t lose unless you give up. You have a deep connection to your own ‘why’ and use it to bounce back fast, even in the most unpredictable situations. You have a strong passion for helping others, and nothing can get in the way of that.

#7: You have strong communication skills

People with strong communication skills can articulate ideas clearly and inspire others through their words. People understand clearly what they want to say and why theysay it. They can find numerous ways of explaining a particular point so that the other person can see things from a different perspective.

#8: You are good at problem-solving

You are good at breaking down complex problems and guiding others towards solutions. You understand where people get tripped up and help them design a simple plan that gets them from point A to point B with the least amount of resistance.

#9: You have leadership qualities

You naturally take on a guiding role, helping others navigate their personal or professional journeys. People tend to look up to you and seek you out in challenging situations. You don’t shy away from difficult situations and can maintain a professional demeanor under stressful situations.

#10: You are a continuous learner

You are committed to your own personal development and are always looking for ways in which you can grow. You encourage others to do the same so that they can explore their own potential and witness for themselves what they’re capable of achieving. You seek out others who are ahead of you and continuously learn how to become a better version of yourself.

While coaches possess many other qualities, I find that the ten I just listed are the most predominant ones. These qualities are evident not only in their professional lives but also in the way they carry themselves as people everywhere they go.

Here are a couple of questions worth exploring if you found value in this short article:

How many of these qualities do you see in yourself?

Which do you feel are most natural to you, and which do you think you may need to work on to improve?

I hope that this article has given you some insights and is helping you either make a commitment to being full in as a life coach or is giving you the answers you were looking for if you were wondering if you’re cut out to be a life coach.

If you want to explore this further, let’s have a chat. I’d love to talk to you and show you how to achieve your dream of being a successful coach without all the struggles most coaches who try to do it on their own have. Grab a spot on my calendar, and let’s talk. Click here to find a time that works for you.
