Life Coaching Lessons — ‘Never Give Up On Your Dream’
I vividly recall reading a story that struck me deeply at the time. Little did I know that it would not only shape my own life but also inspire countless others to achieve their dreams and find success in their businesses. This story became a cornerstone in my journey as a coach, guiding me as I helped others navigate the often challenging path of entrepreneurship.
When I first began coaching other coaches over eight years ago, I was determined to share the knowledge and experience that had helped me build a successful business. I encountered so many incredibly talented coaches, brimming with passion and high hopes, eager to make a difference in the world.
Yet, all too often, I saw those hopes fade as they faced the inevitable challenges that come with building a business. A few months in, when the income they had dreamed of didn’t materialize as quickly as they had hoped, the excitement would wane. They would start to doubt their abilities, question their decision to pursue coaching, and, ultimately, many would give up on their dream of making a meaningful impact.
It was heartbreaking to witness this. To see such talented individuals lose faith in their potential, to see them walk away from something they truly loved, all because they encountered obstacles along the way.
This is when I knew I had to do more than just coach them on business strategies — I had to instill in them a belief that they could overcome these challenges. And that’s when I started sharing a story that had profoundly influenced me, one that I hoped would ignite a spark of perseverance in them as well.
The story I’m referring to is called “Three Feet from Gold,” and it has become a powerful metaphor in my coaching. It’s about a man named R.U. Darby and his uncle, who set out during the Gold Rush, driven by dreams of wealth and success. They discovered a promising vein of gold, invested heavily in mining equipment, and for a time, their efforts seemed to pay off. But then, the gold disappeared. They dug and dug, but the vein was gone. Disheartened and convinced they had failed, they sold their equipment to a junk man for a few hundred dollars and walked away from their dream.
But here’s where the story takes a turn. The junk man, instead of accepting that the mine was depleted, sought the advice of a mining engineer. The engineer advised him to dig just three feet from where the Darbys had stopped. And it was there, just three feet beyond where they had given up, that one of the richest veins of gold in Colorado was found.
This story is a powerful reminder of the importance of perseverance.
How often do we, like the Darbys, walk away just as we’re on the brink of success?
How often do we let temporary setbacks convince us that our dream isn’t possible, when in reality, it’s just within reach, waiting for us to take one more step?
In my experience, the moment you feel most defeated, the moment you’re tempted to give up, is often the moment right before a breakthrough.
Whether in business or in life, success is often just a single decision, action, or thought away. That’s why I share this story with the coaches I work with—to remind them that their dreams are worth fighting for, even when the path seems uncertain.
So, if you’re reading this and you’re facing challenges in your journey, remember the story of “Three Feet from Gold.” Remember that success might be just a little further down the road, just beyond where you feel like stopping. Don’t give up on your dreams. Keep pushing forward because you might be closer to your breakthrough than you think.
The moral of the story is simple yet profound: DON’T GIVE UP ON YOUR DREAMS!
The success you seek is often closer than you realize, and with a little more perseverance, you can achieve exactly what you’ve been dreaming of.
